Arthur pushed his hand deeper into the cave. Then suddenly his fingers bumped into something solid. It felt like wood. He grabbed it in his fist and pulled it out.
“It’s a wardrobe!” he cried.
“Let’s see!” Lucy said.
He passed it down to her, and she looked at it in astonishment. It was the prettiest piece of dollhouse furniture she had ever seen. The wood was painted pale blue, and the knobs were made of tiny pearls.
It felt very heavy. I wonder if there’s anything inside, she thought. She tried to pull the door open, but it was stuck—Tumtum had locked it from the inside.
Arthur turned and reached back into the cave.
“There’s tons more!” he said excitedly, fishing out a four-poster bed.
Lucy put the wardrobe on the ground. And as she reached up to take the bed from Arthur, the door squeaked open, and Lord Seamouse and Tumtum and Nutmeg crept out.
“Come on! Let’s hide here,” Tumtum said, leading them behind a fat gray pebble.
They crouched behind it, watching as Arthur pulled more and more treasures from the cave.
“Here’s a bathtub… and a piano…. And look! There’s even a Ping-Pong table!” he cried.
He passed each item down to Lucy, who packed them into her fishing net. She could hardly wait to take everything back to Seaview Manor. Just think how grand it would look!
“That’s everything,” Arthur said eventually, when he had explored the last inch of the cave.
“What about the mice?” Lucy asked. “I wonder where they disappeared to.”
“They must have escaped somehow. I bet the rock’s full of secret tunnels,” Arthur said.
He clambered down, then the children stood by the Rock Pool, admiring all the lovely things they had found.
But there was still no sign of the boat.
“Where can it be?” Arthur said.
“Shhh!” Lucy said suddenly. “What’s that?”
